Austin is the capital of Texas & is located in Travis County. North Austin & the northern suburbs are in Williamson County, and the Southern suburbs are in Hays County. The Colorado River flows through Austin, & there are 3 lakes created by dam within the city limits – Lake Austin, Lake Travis, & Town Lake. Austin is known for its proximity to Hill Country – which begins on the West side of Austin. West Austin is in the “foothills” of Hill Country & offers some fantastic views of the lakes & the beautiful topography that this provides. Austin typically has hot summers & mild winters, with short transitions of spring & fall. Austin’s summers are usually hot & humid & the average temperatures rise above 90 degrees. It’s not uncommon for temperatures to reach over 100 degrees, on occasion. Winter in Austin is short, dry, and relatively mild. Austin averages only 88 days in which the temperature falls below 45 degrees, and it only falls below freezing, on average 24 days out of the year.
